The first step towards repatriation to Israel is to find historical documents that confirm the Jewish heritage of your ancestors.
Priority should be given to:
- civil records containing information about the nationality of your ancestors;
- primary certificates issued by registry offices;
- Soviet passports;
- household registers;
- information from personal files of military personnel, pension funds, the Red Cross, etc.

Our clients often encounter issues with duplicate certificates issued by the civil registry offices, which, when checked by the competent Israeli authorities, are deemed invalid as evidence of the national affiliation of their relatives.
The civil registry office does not issue certified copies of civil status records, only certificates, which the Israeli authorities may also view critically in the absence of other genuine evidence of the relative's Jewish nationality.
